Frens,Would like to ask. Where can I fix the E30 clutch Fan to Electric Fan conversion? Please recommend a place that know how to do it. Directions & contacts would be GREAT! Please PM or reply here. My regular mech seems not very sure. Thank you in advance =) :top:

Anyone can help? I've found from the net, but its fer the E34. M40 its quite diff. If anyone can tell me what socket / wiring do I need, then maybe I can guide my mech to do it. Thanks =)

No sifu here, but a blind helping the blind.
The original e30 fan clutch works on the concept that when the built-in thermostat senses a rise in temperature, the clutch engages and thus the fan start spinning.

For the proposed modification of adding an electric fan, the electric fan must be connected to a temperature sensor that will send a signal for the fan to turn on when the radiator gets hot. So you must connect the fan to this temperature sensor at the radiator. I donno... I suspect the E30 original radiator might not have this temperature sensor built into the radiator. So you might have to either modify the radiator or find one that has this temperature sensor and can fit into your E30.

Another easy way out is having a switch inside the cab that you can turn on when the car/radiator get hot. Especially when stopping during a jam or at the traffic light, etc.

Any one out there care to comment!

Just checking, are you sure that clutch fan works when the temp reaches certain level? I think mine works immediately and my temp always at 1/4 even in
Qs
. just wonder if my temp goes beyond that I am worried there must be something wrong somewhere until I fix it then it will be back to it and this is my
experience
and now its
perfect
after all hoses even radiator is brand new.

maxx, thanks fer the theory. I've a pic on, before and after the conversion fer M40 but sadly don't have HOW. Will ask around and share when I have any info.

rezzy3181,

The clutch fan should engage and cause the fan to turn when the thermostat inside it sense that the temperature has reached the preset level. Normally if it is faulty, it will not engaged even when the temperature has rise above the preset level.

I once had this problem with my Toyota Corolla during my student day. So I just bolted a metal strip across the fan clutch and fan, so that it spin regardless. that time financially tight ... same now.

If you clutch fan engages immediately ... there should be some thing wrong, it shouldn't.... but I would not worry though as the fan spins, thus you should not have over heating problem.... that would be a major concern... the over heating .. I mean.

i did my previous e30 clutch fan conversion before... i just buy mercedes 124 electric fan and do wiring and its done.
the fan starts once i turn on the ignition key.
good luck
btw: arrrraaaggghhhh, u found conversion on e34???? can you share with me? thanks.

The fan clutch have no direct relation with termostat but it work indirectly with it.

It pure mechanical , bi-metal strip will react according to heat from radiator , it allow silicon oil flow which act as clutch.

Modification to electric fan need good electrical experience , you need good relay and good cable , and point to trigger the relay to switch the fan line. Make sure the fuse you use close to spec of the fan. Cheap cable only can allow small current .

Well let me check with my mechanic of all I know for the past 10years with my e30/m40 it works once the engine starts and for Jap/local cars yes it works when the temp goes to the set level, you can hear the sound of the fan.

I will check with my mechanic as I know my e30/40 works as I start the engine and all Jap/Mal cars work with temp sensor at certain level the fan start working and you can hear when is works.
