The M52 has only single vanos. Technical upgrade to fit double vanos leads to introduction of the M52TU. Except for the double vanos, all other specs remain the same. This engine started being used for 523 sometime in 1999.
When BMW introduced the M54 to replace the M52TU for the E39, they redesignate the 523 into the 525. Higher power and higher torque, nice! Sometime in 2000 i think.
Thus, if you check your car and it has a M52TU engine, it is definitely a 523 and not a 525.
