Double VANOS question

Just a simple question to all the sifu'swhen was the double VANOS implemented in the E39 523? Also when did the E39 523 started to use the M54 engine?..... in Malaysia of course....

i think that's incorrect. my 523i was made in march 2000 and it had M52TU. M54 engine was only fitted on e39 in Sept 2000, when BMW stopped producing 523i and started calling e39 as 525i. Both M52TU and M54 for 523i and 525i respectively are 2.5 liters engines.

i think juggernaut was asking two questions

1) when was double vanos incorporated in the 523? mebe princess was correct mid 1999

2) m54 in 523/525 - i would say mid 2000

The M52 has only single vanos. Technical upgrade to fit double vanos leads to introduction of the M52TU. Except for the double vanos, all other specs remain the same. This engine started being used for 523 sometime in 1999.

When BMW introduced the M54 to replace the M52TU for the E39, they redesignate the 523 into the 525. Higher power and higher torque, nice! Sometime in 2000 i think.

Thus, if you check your car and it has a M52TU engine, it is definitely a 523 and not a 525.

Minor adjustment:

In 2000, E39 is only in 520, 523 (?) and 528 (from Auto Bavaria). The reason that I rember is that in June 2000, I have to make a decision between 523, 528 or E46 328. Took delivery in August 2000.

KL Motorshow in Dec 2000, after which 525, 520 (2.2 l) and 530 were introduced in 2001.

dingswie is right. My 523i is registered in Aug 99 & came with M52TU engine: double vanos.

Again caution....

Way back in Apr 1998, I was enticed with 523. It was highly spec CBUs brought in limited quantities (200 units, me thinks) by AB.

So in 1998/99 there are CBU and CKDs.... for 523. So, does it apply to both?

CBU manufactured after mid 1998 came with double vanos where as CKD only equiped with doule vanos a year later.
