Dear forummers,

I'd like to seek your input on the matter below which happened only a few days ago and has progressively worsened. Attached is the picture of the door clasp of the passenger door where the rubber like material has begun peeling

Would there be any interior trim shops in KL that are able to deal with the matter or would it be easier if this part could repaired DIY?

From my observation it looks likely to be part #18 that is of concern

Appreciate your inputs here

no point buying new as the rubber will keep on peeling. carzone can refurbish it for you, or you can also use hot water to remove the rubber. be warned though, its not easy to DIY.

Rubber peeling may not necessary be related to car's age. I believe our hot humid climate is the main culprit as compared to the European cool temperate climate.

My e60 had similar problems with interior panels rubber like material peeling off. Had it re-furbished at Car Zone,,, http://carzonepro.com/before_after_door_panel_handle.html
Had called them for an appointment, will go to them to see what they can do about it. thanks!

What is the age of the car when the rubber started peeling?

Herbert is probably right, its the climate rather than the age. It started after about 4 years of use, I have seen some deteriorate much earlier. I had sticky surface on the rear passenger clasp too, I managed to solve that with rubbing alcohol and then protecting the surface with a water-based silicone spray (the one's ususally used to protect dashboard surfaces from cracks, peels and UV disclouration). However the front clasp was not really saveable as the rubber on the clasp delaminated altogether.

Some pictures of my car interior being refurbished by Car Zne Interior at Glenmarie.

Mind sharing how much does it cost and which part did you refurbished? To share some experience, I had that sticky stuff to 3 of my handles... front passanger, and the back 2. The front I've purchased the handle straight from BMW Sg. Besi.... it comes in 2 parts, you can buy 4 & 18 (referring to your diagram above) cos when installing No.18, you might accidentally damage No. 4. Well... to the installation part as I tot it would be easy enough to be DIY. How wrong was I.... it was quite painful as most of the mounting and moulding is factory prefab.

Anyway... to cut the story short I gave up wanting to replace the back 2. Did some googling and someone advise to use some thinner to remove the top part of the sticky stuff... did that very carefully and slowly with thinner and a piece of cloth.. finish off with the hand sanitizer and a piece of sponge. Now it's smooth again. Works for me

The price to refurbish one piece is about RM 50.00 to RM 70.00 and it will be best to drop in to the shop and ask for the actual price. If you look at the pictures above, the worker used a kind of chemical to remove completely the sticky part and then sand it down for a smooth surface. After drying, a special matted black paint is sprayed onto the surface. A warranty of 1 year is included in the price.

Hi guys,

Just to update and close this post, I finally had my door handles fixed, the repair for one handle only costed me RM130.00. I did not anticipate the difficulty in dismantling the handle itself as the mountings are using heat moulded rivets (or some sort) just as deviled76 mentioned. The handle had its rubber-like material stripped and resprayed to a matt-black finish. The finish should last a very long time, however I'm just a bit disappointed that the missing rubber-like material now leaves a small gap in the door panel where the handle sits. I guess this is a compromise unless you wanna purchase a brand new handle (which will not guarantee the problem wont repeat!)

anyway here are the pictures, and thanks Herbert for the recommendation!

After 5 years and 95k km done under the hot Malaysian weather, my front passenger door clasp/handle have finally gave way (melted and started peeling).

Sourced for item 4 and 18 from BA for MYR180 in total (incl. of GST). Shall be looking for Roy of Preferred Wheels (a branch of Car Zone - http://www.carzonepro.com/contact.html)%C2

Will wrap the handles with 3M Ventureshield once done. Wanted the car to look as original as possible hence took up this option instead of getting Car Zone to rewrap it as theirs doesn't give the OEM look. Links to their FB page as below. Plenty of sample photos.

Nevertheless, they are reputable as they have plenty of experience in refurbishing interiors of continentals and exotics.

I just take a plastic cake knife and slice/peel the soft/melted rubber coating and clean the remains with paint thinner.

Time spent around an hour. A bottle of thinner cost about RM1.50
