Change to a new engine/Overhaul?

Gathering opinion here. E46 320 2004.THe Condition - THe car were always overheated but the owner could not care less about the car until it was break down again yesterday. All this while, he stop when the engine cut off because of exceeded engine temperature. And then, start again after taking a few minutes rest.HAHA!Its too late now to regret for not tackling the issue in the first place.I just wanna ask around - comparing the cost - will it best to change to a halfcut engine?Looking at the condition, I think the head is bengkok already.

If head bengkok it should be quite difficult to even crank the engine let alone drive it. If the previous owner has been stopping the car every time it overheats chances are the engine is still repairable by doing an overhaul instead of an engine swap. Nevertheless, best to send to you mech to give it thorough diagnostics before embarking on a engine swap.

the head was just bengkok yesterday...not before when he was practising those stop and run..yesterday was the worst..radiator water already went into engine block! so...engine swap or not? bwehehe..

It practically depends on the owners personal preference at the end of the day. I personally practice authenticity which means I try to rebuild, replace or repair it back to it's original state using back the original parts to it's original factory specs...maybe a slight twist of adjustment and tweaks along the way.....

i'm planning to change my engine from m52 2.0 to M54 2.5, can i just change the engine (including ecu) and use back all other setup and gearbox ? will the gearbox from 2.0 match to 2.5 ?
