Hi all,I noticed that the most common brake upgrade for the 318 is to swap the standard set up(solid) to the 328 (ventilated). Just a thought, but can a brembo brake set up (say from an DC5 Integra Type R, Lancer Evo, or Nissan 350Z) be installed as well? It's a Brembo brake set after all... Or would it require too much fabrication that it's just not worth it? It's just a thought. Seeing that how used brembo brake sets are readily availible from the chop shops, it's definitely the cheaper alternative to buying new Brembo sets.I know that most forummers here are purists, however I'm just trying to explore this idea from a practical point of view. Hope you guys can bear with me. Thanks!

the bracket will most probably different. will need modification to the mounting points. and also u'll need find the matching brake disc to be used with the larger calipers.

Can be done... Just a matter of how much mod needed.

thanks for the explanation...

right now just thinking if it's worth the trouble or should I just opt for brakes from a 328 instead.

Thanks!

328 is easier by far.. u just need the entire calipers, housing and all, and some new disks..:).. just did it.. 2 hr job, outside my house, under the tree!..:)

hi

outside of hse ? n under tree ?...thats means ur super gd lei...

hehehehehhe...

cheers bolehland!...

may ur project success...

cheers

hahah..hardly! i'm just illustrating the fact that even a klutz like me could do it!!..hahah. but really, a size 7mm spanner is a *must* for brake caliper jobs... for the damned nipple..(why must they make it in a size that most tool kits DONT have??)... so erm.dun end up stripping out the calipers, disconnecting the hoses, fluid drained out AND not have the dreaded size 7mm... cos there goes ur only hope of bleeding the damned calipers..:)

the swap was easily achieved, bolt on, in fact..:)..so go ahead and do it!!..dun even need floor jack and stands, for the hardcore...:)

Cool. Looks like the 328 swap would be my best bet. If it's really that striaght forward then at least I'll know if my mechanic is overcharging me...

Thanks!

328 brakes will fit perfectly. I believe the E46 330 brakes fit our spindles perfectly as well.

Another cheaper alternative people are going for would be to use the E38 OEM Brembo 4 pot calipers. The calipers are cheap, but there is alot of fabrication involved to mount these on a E36. The biggest worry here would be the quality of work/experience of the guy doing the fabrication and mounting because if something goes wrong, it's your life not his.

Thanks. I guess I'll just stick to the 328 items as I would want to avoid any major fabrication work. I'm presuming that the 320 - 328 brakes are all the same ie ventilated? So all would be a plug and play?

Usually when we apply the brakes, does the rear ever kick in or that's only used when the handbrake is engaged? I'm just wondering if there will be any significant advantage if I transfer my existing front calipers to the rear after I've installed the 328 brakes. Would this also require fabrication work or it's also a simple plug and play?

Thanks.

The mounting points on your front calipers don't match the rear so it's not a plug and play. You'll need fabrication work.

damnu, if you're really serious about upgrading your brakes but have a tight budget just go for the E46 330i brakes.

Also make sure you change your brake hoses to the stainless steel braided hoses. Rosedi Motorsports carry the ProRS range for E36 at RM340.

Thanks for the advice loafer. But based on what I've been reading so far, the e46 brake set up will set me back around Rm2k. I think I might just upgrade to the 328 set up first and slowly take it from there. After much thought, I dont think i'll be upgrading my M40 engine anytime soon, so it should be sufficient for now. I'll tackle the handling aspects of the car first before going for more power - and THEN i'll think of the e46 330 units

But appreciate your advice mate. Cheers

I simply love my 325i ventilated disc brake system for my 318i. Simply awesome for a 4 potter like mine. Yeeehaaa!

if we use brake set from others make... how about the abs sensor... based on my experience before, I've changed my proton putra brake set to evo3 brake set... it's working well and more confidence but the ABS not func anymore..... think what happen if you brake emergency in heavy rain...

I agree with dragman, furthermore u have to consider on the insurance point should anything unwanted happened..
