Hi sifus, lately have been having squeaks in the brakes after mechanic "serviced" it. The mechanic said that he swapped it from left to right and cleaned away excess brake dust as the pads were still usable. Even had the brake fluid flushed. Not sure what the exact problem is. Could be brake pads or the brake disc itself, knowing that our E46s are not young cars. The brakes only squeaks on short stops, ie. like in traffic jams or at speeds below 30-40km/h. Only squeaks when its up to working temperature, doesnt squeak when its cold though. Getting annoying, would like to know if anybody has any experience out there.

Might be due to the brake pads or disc rotors as told my mech earlier when replacing my disc rotors. Certain brands of brake pads such as Bendix are known to cause squeeking sounds.

RM120 per side for parts alone. Brand is Febi (Germany). Brands like TRW & Brembo are at the same price. Original BMW rotors is RM250 per pc.

well my rear was squaking after few days i took it...hence i changed the pads and voila...instant silence :)..

2 rear pads @ RM 100 (ATE Brand) @ BOMIN...

Swapped the brake pads left to right? First time I heard of this. A brake pad wears after a period of time, and I don't see any logic of swapping them. To balance out the wear on he brake pads? I doubt. Normally you change them as that's what stopping your car.

But squeaking could be caused either by brake pads or even brake disc.

Another reason would be the the pad and disc is not properly mated hence the squeak. That's what happened when you swapped both pads and i too never heard of this practice swapping brake pads ... i can't see the justification when doing so.

i'm having the same problem since i changed my pads n rotors about a year ago....its brembo discs n original pads...my mechanic that changed dont know what is the problem...then i went to the bmw specialist...they told me they had the same problem with other car before...they just replace it with the new set n its gone...problem solve...they put the squeky one to other car...perfect no squeky sound what so ever.... so maybe have to live with it now until next pads changed...
