I wonder what does the 380 points for? Appearance? Expensive environmental friendly and light material? Is reliability being considered?

Fuel efficiency to power ratio is definitely considered but it should not be so much different from Toyota for scoring less than 70 points. On reliability, parts sharing flexibility and cost, Toyota can beat a BMW engine hands down, anytime!!

Dude, read the comments from the jury that voted carefully.

Some relevant extracts for you to ponder.

“Outstanding in power output, low-end torque, refinement and fuel economy. Top marks to BMW”
Arturo de Andrés, Automóvil

John Carey from Wheels magazine said the unit is “proof that BMW pushes the boundaries of engine technology more than any other manufacturer”.

Auto’s Lorenzo Facchinetti thinks it is a “gorgeous engine that has the ability to make a 1-Series or 3-Series feel like an old M3, with much more fluidity and fuel efficiency”. And Schalk Pienaar from Wiel commented that it shows “good use of available technology to lower fuel consumption and provides smooth and strong power delivery”.

Many were wowed by its sheer performance, or recognised the significance of the debut of BMW’s high-precision direct-injection system, which helps to maximise performance and fuel economy by precisely dosing the air-fuel mix. Adoption of the system also enables a higher compression ratio (10.2:1) for better fuel economy as well as a more efficient method of combustion chamber cooling.

WE are talking about Engine Of The Year here. That being said, I have not heard of any reliability issues with the 3 liter twin-turbo engine. The main reason why Toyota is down there with 70 points is because their engine is as interesting as you.:thefinger: Cabutzzz.........

Cheers:love:

What to do?

For those who are wealthy enough to replace a BMW every 3 years or can afford tenth of thousand of Ringgit for maintenance cost every year, no problem lor. The engine well serve their purpose as they are only made to last 36 months.. so no reliability issue lor. That's the cost of "..pushes the boundaries of engine technology more..".

With that remark, hope it will boost the local sales for their M54B30 cars lor...

And yes, u r right, I not as interesting as u.. that's why u r up there and I am down here loo.. glad that u can still see the small miserable me.. Mr. President SIR!

Dude, please write responsibly. BMW engines made to last 36 months?? Where did you get that from?

After 36 months .... no standard .... become antic ....... cannot cope-up with newer one ... heheheheheh:rock:

albundy,

he's referring to the problems faced by owners of almost new cars such as the E60 and E90 where their engines faced multiple problems with typically engines replaced after about 3 years of use. No statistics, but serious enough for BMW to look into.

They way some of them experience these issues, I would definitely stay away from the newer BMWs until these things are sorted out.

Bro, tis is d most exciting & relevant engine 2 most BMW fan in d world. E9x/E81/E82/E87 335 sell like hotcake in Euro & US. Mayb in Bolehland is rare sebab mahal.

If u ever come 2 Sg, u could a lot of E9x 335. I hav seen b4 335 in action, tapi driver skill tak boleh pakai. So, my E39 520 still can catch up & overtake him.

Yeah, but what does this has to be with Engine of the YEar award when the jury has clearly mentioned their reasons for awarding it to BMW??

And so far, with respect to the twin turbo 3 liter engine, I have not heard of any complaints.

Let's stick to topic.

Cheers

I got one of those engine of the year. yeah...NO problem at all with the engine so far... but skill is my issue now:rolleyes:

boss, not defending the guy. Just trying to explain what he meant. It does not suit the topic but he's concern is does the said engine has reliability issues like some of them are facing.
