I recall reading an interview in the Star last year when the then BMW MD for Malaysia Mr Briscoe was asked the following question:- “4. BMWs sold in Malaysia have a manufacturer's defect warranty of two years. However, markets like the US are enjoying a four-year warranty, while brands such as VW and Porsche are offering four, even 5-year warranties. Parts and repair costs of BMWs are very expensive, hence an extended warranty should greatly entice a wider scope of customers and make sure BMW is keeping with the trends or even setting one with a better warranty and service package. What is your take on this? Dr Tan Chin Heong, KL Mr Briscoe’s answer was:- Wherever we operate in the world, the BMW Group aims to provide the most relevant solutions, which benefit local customers the most. While it is true that many markets and brands have extended their warranty periods, it is pertinent to point out that the lifespan of BMW parts and components often exceeds even the duration of the extended four-year and five-year warranties. This is why in 2006, BMW Group Malaysia introduced the BMW Service + Repair Inclusive programme, which entitles BMW customers hereto professional service, maintainance and repair for 3 years or 60,000km,whichever comes first. In doing so, we are the leaders in providing our Malaysian customers with the relevant support needed to maintain their BMWs.” http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2012/6/9/business/11436758&sec=business Personally I would prefer a longer warranty period as compared to the BSRI especially whenoil service based on BSRI is every 20000km. I understand BMWMalaysia had issued a written advisory in Nov 2009 to owners stating that thenew Condition Based Service is set at 10000km for the 1[SUP]st[/SUP] oil changeand 20000km for subsequent oil changes. A friend of mine who has a 2009 E60 gave me a copy of the letter he received from BMW Malaysia on this. The letter went on to state that:- “Additionally, for better engine protection and peak performance, oil services at every 10,000km is also suggested. However, a more frequent engine oil change such as this will not be covered by the BSRI program.” For those of us who do about 20000km a year. BSRI will probably give us 4 oil changes, a new air filter and cabin filter, brake fluid, wipers, brake pads and spark plugs if you are lucky. Therefore additional warranty is much more valuable than free 3 year BSRI especially since F30 & F10 don't seem to be as robust as previous models based on the complaints I read in their respective threads. I know that BMW gives goodwill warranty after 2 years but buyers should'nt be at their mercy. Ideally BMW Msia should match their main competitor in Msia ie Mercedes Benz which gives 4 year warranty on all new vehicles. Even in Spore PML which is a Sime Darby subsidiary gives 3 years warranty with optional BSRI at the buyers costs. We in Msia pay double (almost RM300k) what buyers in UK(£30000) or US($50000) pay for a 328 but are shortchanged when it comes to warranty and after sales service. BMW Msia, if you are reading this thread, I hope that extending the warranty becomes a priority. Otherwise, based on what I am reading in the F30 & F10 threads, you are going to start to lose customers.
