Branding differs from country to country. Some country where they have a good chain for sales and after sales services, autorised or third party does contribute a lot to the brand recognition and reliability. Volume game too. The more the car being sold the more spares available and more workshop available. It creates competition in term of price and quality for parts and services. So does used car endorsement. They really control the resale value. Once they term it as 'cold car', resale value will drop perhaps up to 80%. Especially luxury line like S class, 7 Series, A8. Over here if I'm not mistaken 5 brands get supports from finance company especially if need financing above 10 years car. Those are Proton, Perodua, Honda, BMW and Merc. Back to comfort, reliability etc. It still subjective and ties to personal liking for look and handling. Reliability also ties to how its being taken care and LUCK ! Perhaps we should compare by lining up based on the series, years, engine. For example : Merc C Class - W202 (1993 - 2000) BMW E36 - Audi A4 B5 / B5.5 Merc C Class - W203 (2000 - 2007) BMW E46 - Audi A4 B6 / B7 Merc C Class - W204 (2007 - ) BMW E90 - Audi A4 B8 then goes for E Class, 5 Series, A6 S Class, 7 series, A8 Coupe vs Coupe SUV vs SUV Brabus vs Alpina etc //M vs RS M-Sports vs SLine Not to mention engine capacity and technology used....Turbo vs Kompressor. As for tranny, Tiptronic vs SMG vs DSG vs CVT etc. Bulit quality as the model progress typically the quality may improve. Example E36 interior build quality is better than Audi A4 B5. But Audi B6/B7 can be better as they progress. Maintenance wise....again subjective. My friend spent rm40k for his W202 C200. Another colleague recently spent rm50k to overhaul his S280. Again it is very personal. Bottom line once the passion kicks in you just let it flow ... For me for now....BMW !
