I've driven a few diesels, most do have the clanging sound being noticeable, especially the Land Rovers but also the MB W203 C200. The E60 520d was barely noticeable, and wasn't noticeable in the X6 3.0 diesel. Without looking at the vehicle markings, I couldn't tell it was a diesel until I looked at the rev counter (lower rpm range) and the awesome torque from stepping on the accelerator. The sound wasn't even noticeable.
