Blind woman shunned by children and siblings

Left alone: Asiah claims her family no longer wants her and that she was beaten up by her grandson.MIRI: When 67-year-old Asiah Abdullah lost her eyesight two years ago due to disease, she also lost the love of her children and grandchildren. Since losing her eyesight, she has been shoved from one of her children's home to another. Even her adopted son and a sister would not accept her. Two weeks ago, when she tried to force her way into her daughter's house here, she claimed her son-in-law took her to Miri Hospital and left her there. Asiah said her 20-year-old grandson also beat her. “Before I became blind, my family treated me well. After I became blind, nobody wants me. “My children don’t want me, my grandchildren don’t want me. My grandchildren hate me the most. He (grandson) beat me up. “My son-in-law sent me to hospital and told hospital authorities that I fell down. He just left me there. Nobody wants me anymore,” she said when a Miri Red Crescent officer visited her. Miri Hospital had sent her to the Miri Blind Centre after she was treated for injuries to her neck and upper body. She now suffers from bladder problems and she cannot control her urine and bowel movement. The Red Cresent officer said efforts were being made to have her stay at the Seri Kenangan Home for the Aged in Sibu, some 450km south of here. Assistant State Minister for Communications and Infrastructure Development Lee Kim Shin said the Miri Welfare Department should investigate the case. “Locate the children and ask them to be more responsible. They cannot just abandon her,” Lee said
