Hi, I am thinking of getting my first beemer, mainly the e39. It will be a car for my wife, as a replacement for her current harrier.Still learning, and hopefully i will be able to pop the cherry and own one soon.Greeting to all the sifus here!

My greeting to you too..have u made an intro in the newbie section? e39 is a good choice with its timeless shape n design..happy hunting

I thought this is the place where I do the introduction?

I always like the 3 series, but now that I am getting older, it seems a bit small for a family. That's the reason why i am opting for the e39. Am a bit worries on the maintenance... Wife a bit reluctant on a beemer cause she always see ppl with a beemer on the roadside!

My record after more than 5 years owning e39, maintenance average RM500 per month is MUST, no matter how careful u are.

Thank you everyone...

RM500 / month! Wow.. that is a lot, isn't it? What is it for? Thought just routine oil change? What else do you spend on?

welcome to our community. sound like you need to get educated on the thrills and spills of owning a 10 year old european car.

If you're lucky, some months your only outlay is for fuel bro...

Some of us are still driving around in 20 year old Bimmers and they're still going strong and rewarding us with very high mileages. :top:

Mine e39 spend averagely 1.5k per month after first year of ownweship (year 2003 car when i own her in year 2008), there after until now around RM600 per month...Good luck & i'm sure it worth for what u paid...

As mizhan said, u are buying a car most probably more than 10 years (even the last batch also 8 years), so be ready to change most of the parts. Anyway after u spend the money, the new parts will last u another 3-5 years and u can enjoy the driving pleasure. Unless u spend 20K when u 1st purchase the car, then it might save u some trouble in the future.

Not to scare u but it is a fact.

So, most money is spent on replacing new parts? When replacing parts, do you buy new, used or 3rd party?

Is it true that e39 has the over heat issue? Went testing last night, and the car over heated, bc they guy said the water bottle is leaking, and he didn't change it. He said this is common as you need to unscrew/screw very often to release tension. I was like, huh? Never heard of.... Was he telling the truth or BS?

Depends on your preference and budget bro. Sometimes a new and original product may be exorbitant, and many are not shy to admit that they are sourcing for 2nd hand or even half-cut, sometimes even going down the OEM route. Of course, some with success, some with added woes, but it's all part and parcel of owning a car right?

And of course, you have come to the right place in being able to have an avenue to seek for guidance here on the forums.

I seldom buy used parts, unless the non mechanical parts. Why bother used parts if u have $$?

Yes, overheat is famous for e39. Check the whole cooling system.

You only need to loosen ur pressure relief valve if you refill coolent after overheat. It is to make sure the trapped air fully release from ur coolant tank...

When you have little $$, how? :)

how to avoid the overheat issue?

How to avoid? I really dont know how to answer, may be frequent check the hose condition, thermostat, and water level is the way to avoid overheat.
