With the common use of maintenance-free battery, we seldom give the battery a second thought. If you have the following symptoms, maybe it's time to check or change your battery.1. fuel consumption slowly climbing up2. rough idle3. jerky gear change (auto)4. intermittent inexplicable loss of power (hard to rev, and no torque)5. can't start engine with one key turn6. alarm goes off frequently for no reasonAll the above can be affected by the battery.A common misconception is that the battery is only used to start the car; after that the alternator takes over."A car battery is principally used to start the engine. It is also used to filter or stabilize power and to provide extra power for the ignition, lighting and other accessories when their combined load exceeds the capability of the charging system, i.e., when the engine is idling. It also provides power to the electrical system when the charging system is not operating. The battery lies hidden under the bonnet and is an essential component of your vehicle. Regular care is a must, for if it in bad shape, the car will refuse to move. "Push-start" is a solution but cannot be carried on for long. A well-maintained battery lasts for two years. Regular care of your battery is a must, otherwise your car will not move. "Push-start" is an option but not a long term solution. A well maintained battery usually lasts for two years."Even if your battery reads 12.5 v, if it is more than one year old, it may be time to change. For a 200-300 bucks 'mod' that improves so many things, it pays for itself very quickly. Your car will feel 'young' again. Everythings seems to work that much better. My fuel consumption improved by more than 25%. At the rate I travel, the battery pays for itself in a month.

:D Bro,

Which one is better? Normal battery or maintenance free one?

Dunno.

But I tend to favour newer technology.

Go for the best your budget will buy.

Just a friendly feedback to the everyone...
I've just changed the battery on my E30 to the maintenance free unit. It went for 320 after discount. Now on the E30 its the 66 model. The thing is pretty heavy compared to the 'add-water' type.

Have your battery tested every year as mine water based battery only lasted a year. It only take a little tools that reads if its fine.

And the difference b/w water based and maintenance free is about 30-40 ringgit. So you might be better of getting the better.

Also battery prices have gone up this month according to this workshop dude. So expect to pay a little more than before.
Batteries also comes in various sizes. ie. the smaller batteries, i.e. off japanese cars cost only 160 for the maintenance free unit. But woudl cost twice as much for a bigger unit. I realized this and was shocked as my Airtrek's battery is much cheaper than my old clunker.

And as for saving fuel, I find that difficult to prove.

ive had my free maintenence for about 2years now no problems at all....TOUCH WOOD!! my petrol has been fine, my car isnt sluggish.. and the idling for me is oklah..considering i just had a top overhaul.. all in all its fine, im using GP- ATLAS Dry cell, Din66 for my 635CSI this batt cost me round RM450

Good to hear you guys keeping an eye on your batteries.

Fuel consumption improvement is very noticable in my case because I record every km and every litre. I find it is an excellent way to monitor the health of the car. The moment the consumption deteriorates for a prolonged period, I know something is wrong and I send the car in for a check. And if it comes back up, I know I've changed the correct part.

Oh my Fuel consumption is very good in my car eventhough it is a 3500cc car, a full tank (RM110) can last me 6 days at the most 6and half, for everyday driving. roughly 400KMs more or less about that.

Wow you guys get such good mileage. Something that I cannot duplicate cause I have a lead foot and I drive in daily city traffic.
Since I have a new battery, I'll be curious to know what my mileage does now. Have to start tracking it and maybe keep the burning of rubbers to a minimum.

OK, I'm in a nitpicking mood right now: I wouldn't consider changing the battery as a "mod" as it doesn't alter or add to your car - instead, it restores your car's performance to what it should be in the first place. :p

RM300 for DIN66 and MF? That's a good price.

Fellas, I think my battrey ison its way out and am thinking of a replacement. Any suggestion on the type (MF or water), brand and the place to get it?

Thanks in advance

Victorite DIN66 MF - got it for RM310, but heard that can probably get at RM280. 2nd day only but so far, car feels much smoother!

Hey guys,

A friend sent me this, was wondering if it's available here?
Sorry. Can't seem to post the pix!

A Genuine BMW battery
has better reserves.

There is scarcely a place in the world where Genuine BMW batteries have not had to prove their worth. Whether in the Arctic Circle or the desert, we demand absolute optimum performance of a BMW battery - every time. Only then do we consider it suitable for daily use.

Your battery has the most difficult job to accomplish, especially in winter, because then it has to make available 50% more power than in summer, in spite of its performance being reduced at low temperatures by up to 40%.

Genuine BMW batteries overcome this difference effortlessly; because they have a “hidden reserve” – from the moment they leave the factory their capacity exceeds standard performance requirements by 15%.

Genuine BMW batteries are available as standard hybrid batteries, or maintenance-free calcium batteries, which start from cold at temperatures as low as -25ºC. Both meet our very highest quality requirements in terms of functionality, life and performance. Their robust and impact resistant Polypropylene casing is also resistant to acids, benzene, oil and seawater and is 100% recyclable.

Water loss is very slight due to optimum heat insulation and reduced performance or wear and tear due to low acid levels is avoided from the outset, as the acid reservoir is two times bigger than average.

Genuine BMW batteries:
• Have a hidden power reserve (15% greater performance than required)
• Larger than average acid reserves (reducing wear & tear)
• Have a robust casing (maximum crash safety)
