Message: <blockquote data-quote="jaleeks23" data-source="post: 19105" data-attributes="member: 8431"><p>The Government has agreed to an automated enforcement system to curb traffic violations and reduce the high rate of fatalities on the roads.Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said the system, which included the use of cameras, was being finalised.Speaking to reporters, he said the Cabinet was waiting for a detailed study of the system.“We record about 7,000 deaths from road accidents a year, and need to find ways to reduce the number.“There are several factors that lead to fatal accidents, among which are the quality and width of our expressways,” he said after inspecting the Road Transport Department (JPJ) building here which was damaged by a fire last Nov 29.Abdul Rahim said he recently visited several major cities in Java, Indonesia, and noted fewer fatal accidents there as the roads were not as wide as those in Malaysia.He said there were about nine million cars and 8.5 million motorcycles in Malaysia, and urged all parties, especially motorists, to prioritise safe driving.Abdul Rahim also said the ministry would look into replacing the damaged block, which housed Muar JPJ’s administrative and IT centres, with a three-storey building.</p></blockquote><p></p>
