A FOUR-DAY international motorcycle expo in Kuala Lumpur that kicks off today is set to be the largest motorcycle show in Southeast Asia, its organiser said.Asian International Motorcycle 2007 (AIME) - showcasing the latest in motorcycle design and technology globally - was also expected to be a growth catalyst for the domestic industry, AIME managing director Datuk Aiddie A. Ghazlan said."Our view is that the local motorcycle market is far from stagnation although far from brilliant. Year-to-year increase of new bikes registration shows an annual growth of about five per cent," Aiddie said.
"Only the big bikes attract a lot of taxes here compared to the smaller ones. This probably explains why only 0.2 per cent of bikes in Malaysia are big bikes of above 600cc," he added.AIME 2007 covers 2,417 sq m of exhibition space at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Futuristic concept bikes and custom vehicles will also be unveiled by renowned automobile manufacturers.The world's fastest drag racer, "The Blue Panther" Takeshi Shigematsu, will wow the crowd with his racing skills and share his experience in clocking 200mph in the AHDRA (All Harley Davidson Racing Association) circuit.Also on the floor with their customised bikes will be Roger Goldammer (2004 & 2005 AMD World Custom Bike Champion), Matt Hotch (USA Custom Bike Champion), Chicara Nagata (2006 World AMD Custom Bike Champion) and Chica (USA Custom Bike Champion).Included in the list of champions too is Russell Mitchell, the president of Exile Cycles. Exile produces around 20 complete custom bikes each year, and they have garnered hundreds of magazine features around the globe.AIME 2007 is also hosting the first ever KL BikeFest, probably Asia's biggest street party, with motorcycling fun and games for the motorcycling community and industry. It will stretch along Jalan P. Ramlee.
