hey all just wondering if anyone had the similar issue as mine .... Problem : knocking sound at front driver right hand side at 2K RPM ( when slammed hard down from low rpm to top AND when climbing up hill gradually )Tendency : Always happen ( cold and hot day )engine : slow 6 potter items changed : before even the vanos seals being replaced the noise had been there .. 1) so upon changing the vanos seal together with the plugs and top gasket, the knocking is still there 2) cleaned all the MAF / TB and ICV , knocking is still there 3) Fuel filter , knocking still there Lastly suspected due to a weakening fuel pump hence not enough pressure ..changed that too and problem is still there anyone could shed some light to this gremilin ?also tried running on 97 for 2 weeks or so and the knocking is still there

have your specialist mechanics checked the injectors and plug cables?

last diagnosed was pointing at the fuel pump ... maybe will get them to check this area

You sure it's not something serious like bearings or the crank?

nope not coming from the bearing and cranks ...it sounds like a ktak ktak ktak ...loosen spring sound ...and only happen for a split second around the 2K mark below

Sounds like retard timing retarded to retard.. :4:

Among others..

~ Tappet loose liao..
~ Timing chain panjang liao..
~ Timing rail/guide makan d..

tappet no sound lorrr as my oil is being changed less then 3K the most
chain panjang and guide rail makan ...no signs of that as i've just done my beisan vanos seal replacement and timing is also being checked at the same time

running obd1 single vanos and with/without o2 plugged also have the same symptom

Got video? In HD if possible? :p
Does the sound tone change if the load on the engine changes? Going uphill same sound as going downhill? Does the knocking only happen at a specific RPM range or it starts at a certain point and remains as the RPMs increase?

can't catch that in video as the noise can be heard when the windows are down or if you're the type that could easily detect strange sound ...as for mine even the mechanic too took sometime to detect it after a few test drives ..

sound tone does not really change upon load ( consistant sound note ) easily noticed when climbing up hill only and no sound for donwhill drive ..as for the RPM it usually happen soemwhere around 1.6K to 2K rpm and stay for a short while ...

and to add on i do get some sort of jerking ( like petrol surge ) kindda symptom at times ..even after the fuel pump changed

bro iceman, this may not help, but ill give it a try anyways. ur symptom is similar to my other car, experiencing jerking and knocking. tried various methods, changing fuel pump, new head gasket, etc2.. at the end of the day, it was the thermostat, the engine runs at a lil bit higher temp, which with the usual needle temp we couldnt see the difference. found out when i bought a digital performance temp meter.

We similiar issue as we talk about this last week hehe. Hopefully got some people to shed some light. Mine appear after i changed my longshaft guibo and mounting. Exhaust was removed during that process. remember talking to tribena and xxx about it.

Nope ours the noise only appears when the accelerator is pressed not during idle. its only present when moving. when stand still reving no such noise. more prominent when climbing uphill

I started reading on this symptoms yesterday from 12am - 4am. Man ! there's heaps of possibilities. Suggest to get it to a specialist for problem solving, else you'll end up changing not faulty parts for nothing. My take, since it was present after the vanos seal change, the problem should be in that area >> tensioner, spocket, inner cup, chain, etc... Hope you get it sorted out soon. Good luck bro..

What u reading until 4am la ...

Its in his first post, before new vanos seal sound ald there ...

Iceman, if only at 2K rpm and it doesn't affects engine performance then imho it may be something is loose. Try check your reciprocating parts eg fan, waterpump, all those pulleys. Mine too has a strange sounds on the front left side and you know what, after checking thoroughly i just stop the car, opens the bonnet and then closed it back, after that the noise dissappear but only for that day, if happens again then i just do it again but as in your case the noise only appears when the car's driving at low speed eg less than 60km/h...

It's one of those unexplained things in a 15yrs old magnificent car...
