328i Gear Box Speed

Hi I am new here, I just want to know how to verify the Gear box whether 5 speed or 4 speed for BMW 328i Auto year 1996 E36 model? Any different between T type gear holder with the Round type gear holder? I plan to get a 2nd hand 328i year 1996.
