This water pump failure is quite common apparently with the N52's and the electronically driven water pump. I had this problem with my 525i and you will find its very ironic. When you are on the highway cruising at 140km/h - 150km/h, DING DING DING... the yellow ask you to drive moderately. 10 seconds later, BONG. Red color and your balls drop to the road telling you your car overheated. Stop for 5 minutes, restart, no problem. Logically, the car's engine should be colder on the highway with the amount of air flowing into the radiator and engine bay doing those speeds constantly? When i reached Singapore, stuck in the city in traffic jam, no problem. Perfectly fine. No sound at all. When i went back to KL, same thing. Had to stop 6 times. Reach back KL, no problem. Even drives to KLIA to pick up people. Subsequently it seems because this pump is electronically operated or activated, when its faulty or semi-faulty, when you maintain a certain rev point for a long period of time (highway driving), it will fail to engage accordingly causing your car to momentarily overheat but not excessively? When you are in start stop traffic, the pump will engage. I actually drove with this problem for almost 5 months. Only irritated me on outstation trips. It happened at 103,000kms. I call it the curse of the 100,000kms because along with it, some other things went too but i think after that distance, RM3000+ on a BMW after all that pleasure is a fair price to pay. But thats just me. :)
