I drove a friend's 2005 E90 320i today, I found it to be a very pleasant drive. I also felt it was as big as a E39. This was confirmed by the following post I found in Bimmerfest forum:- "The E39 5 and the E90 3 are very similar, and almost identical in some dimensions. I spent a few hours in the showroom while my 5 was in for service and I actually measured the interior dimensions of a new E90 to compare to my E39. I took along my trusty 12' stanley tape measure! E39 Vs. E90 1. The front headroom measured identical at 37" drivers seat at lowest position 2. Front legroom - The E90 has slightly more leg room and much greater seat travel. (drivers seat in comfortable driving position) 3. rear headroom - the E90 is a little tight, about .4" less than the E39 4. rear legroom - the E90 actually has about 1" more rear legroom than the E39 with the drivers seat in the same position as in the front legroom test. The biggest difference though is that in the E39 5 there is more room for your toes under the front seats. The E90 seats sit lower to the floor so you cant put your feets under them as much. 5. rear shoulder room - both measured identical at 57" across just below the windows Just thought I would share my observations. Subjectively, I dont think there is much difference between the two. The back seat does feel a bit smaller in the 3 but not by much, and the measurements prove it. In the drivers seat of the E90 you feel like you sit up much higher in the car than in the E39. I had to double check that the seat was all the way down. "
